In designing a waffle slab, there are several steps to consider.
1. Defining the intended use and parameters of the slab is the first step. This includes determining the size and shape of the slab, its load bearing requirements, and the range of materials that will be used.
2. The second step is to create the layout of the slab, including the thickness and density of the concrete. This is done by determining the spacing of the reinforcing steel bars (rebars) and other components such as air voids or insulation materials.
3. Once the layout has been completed, strength calculations must be performed to ensure the waffle slab can safely bear the loads it will be subjected to.
4. Finally, the design must be approved by local building codes and may require inspection. Once approved, the full construction can begin.
