1. Clean the door: Start by wiping down the door with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris. Allow the door to dry thoroughly before proceeding.
2. Prepare for painting: Lightly sand the entire surface of the door with a medium-grit sandpaper. This will help the paint adhere better and create a smooth, even finish. Don’t forget to sand around the edges. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth, then apply a thin layer of primer to the door with a paintbrush, using long, even strokes. Allow the primer to dry completely.
3. Paint the door: Once the primer is dry, begin painting the door. Use a high-quality, water-based latex paint for best results. Use a newer, high-dense foam roller to apply the paint in thin, even layers. For a professional finish, lightly “tip off” the paint—run a brush lightly over the wet surface in one direction to level out any bumps or ridges. Allow each coat of paint to dry completely between applications. It may take two or three coats of paint to achieve full coverage.
4. Finish the door: When the final coat of paint is dry, use a fine grit sandpaper to lightly sand any imperfections. Wipe down the door with a damp cloth to remove any dust. To protect your newly painted door from scratches and chips, apply a layer of clear polyurethane varnish. Follow the directions on the varnish container for best results.
