Two different contour lines cannot cross because they represent different elevations. Contour lines are lines on a map that connect points of equal elevation above or below a reference surface, such as sea level. They are used to represent the shape and slope of the land, and are typically drawn at intervals, such as every 10 or 20 feet.

If two different contour lines were to cross, it would indicate that there is a point on the map where the elevation changes by more than the interval between the contour lines. This would be physically impossible, as the elevation of the land cannot change instantaneously. Therefore, contour lines cannot cross on a map.

It is important to understand the meaning and significance of contour lines in order to accurately interpret a topographic map and understand the terrain.

On a topographic map, contour lines represent different elevation levels of the land. These lines cannot cross because a single point on the land can only have one elevation. Therefore, only one contour line will pass through any given point on the map.

      * This is because one location on the surface of Earth cannot be at two different elevations!
