The mean sea level (MSL) is the average height of the sea at all tide stages. MSL is determined at any given location by averaging tide heights over a period of at least 19 years to determine the mean sea level (free of tides). In India MSL used is that established at Karachi-Pakistan before independence. Now in Mumbai, MSL is marked / fixed for using it as reference for all professional design work purpose. In all important surveys this is used as datum. Elevation of any important construction, platform, airport, dam, base stations, railway station, mountains, cities, permanent bench marks were measured with reference to Mean Sea Level. It is measured in Meter.

MSL stands for mean sea level, it is a mean of sea level reading it is taken from Mumbai, but before freedom of India it is taken from Karachi, this is the main reference point from which all the points are taken and leveled and calculated in surveying.
