The main function of an expansion joint is to provide for the expansion of the pavement and thus to maintain compressive stresses within safe limits. When installed between the pavement and a fixed structure, such as a bridge, an expansion joint servesĀ also to prevent the pavement from exerting damaging pressures against the structure. Expansion joints also function as contraction joints and, furthermore, permit vertical angular movement of the slab ends in the manner of hinged joints

To avoid the formation of expansive cracks as a result of temperature changes As concrete is placed in a confined space, it expands due to the high temperature, resulting in cracks.

Concrete is not an elastic material, so it can not bend or stretch without breaking. Concrete, on the other hand, expands and shrinks, causing structural components to change slightly.

Several expansion joints are used in concrete construction to avoid adverse effects from concrete movement, including floors, walls, roof expansion joints, and paving slabs.

These joints must be engineered, found, and assembled with care. If a slab is continuously placed on surfaces with more than one face, an expansion joint will be required to minimize stresses. A concrete sealer may be used to fill in holes left by cracks.
