3. Sight the two reference points that mark the ends of the horizonal distance you want to measure.
4. Take a reading from the first point then move the theodolite over to the second point and take another reading.
5. Subtract the second reading from the first reading to obtain the horizontal angle.
6. Use the formula for tan (1/2) multiplied by twice the distance between the two points to find the distance.
