It is an empirical model which shows the relation of direct runoff to excess rainfall. It originated by Sherman in 1932 as it says” the basin outflow resulting from one unit of direct runoff generated at a uniform level on the drainage area at particular rainfall rate during specific rainfall duration. So the concept of the unit hydrograph is the runoff is linear, so the runoff from more or less than one unit will be a multiple of the unit hydrograph.
