Definition of Bricks

“The Bricks May be defined as a uniformly burnt rectangular unit having high compressive strength”

A good brick is prepared from a soil containing requisite proportion of sand and clay. Also a small percentage of lime, iron oxide and  magnesium is necessary . Bricks are mainly used for foundations, Wells, Roofing, floors, drains for a number of small and big big structure of different shapes.

Property of Bricks

Properties of bricks are directly depend upon their following category.

  1. Size: the shape of the bricks is rectangular but the size may be different from place to place as per IS 1077-1970 the following two sizes are recommended in India the brick having height 9 cm should be molded with frog but the bricks of height 4 cm may not dimensions of 20 cm  of brick masonry comprises 500 bricks.

2. Weight of brick: A standard brick should have weight between 3 kg to 3.5 kg. The weight of brick depends upon the type of clay used and method of molding of Bricks.

3. Insulation: A dense, heavy and low porous brick have adequate insulation against heat, noise and cold.

As we know that, Various countries have various standard brick size and dimensions, however, brick can be made in multiple shapes and sizes, depending on its application as well as uses.

If bricks are very large, it is difficult to burn them properly and they become too heavy to be placed with a single hand. On the other hand, if suppose bricks are too small, more quantity of mortar is required. Hence, a standard dimension is determined for various brick works. So lets go and know about Size of bricks in different types of countries like USA, Australia and etc.

Brick Size in United States (USA)

In the United States, modern standard bricks are (which is controlled by American Society for Testing and Materials i.e. ASTM)
About the size of bricks  8 × 3 5⁄8 × 2 1⁄4 inches (203 × 92 × 57 mm).

The more commonly used is the modular brick 7 5⁄8 × 3 5⁄8 × 2 1⁄4 inches (194 × 92 × 57 mm).

Brick Size in Australia

According to Boral Company in Australia (Boral Limited is a multinational company manufacturing and supplying building and construction materials), the standard brick size (or the working size) is 76mm high, 230mm long and 110mm wide as per the Australian Standard AS-4455. Some bricks are made with different work sizes. 50 mm and 90 mm high bricks, 90 mm wide bricks and 290 mm long bricks are used for different structural and aesthetic effect.
